My Teaching Philosphy

-Dr. Harish Panth

My niche expertise and diverse experience in Physics and Biosciences as a research scientist and a teacher along with my current involvement as a life coach and mentor will greatly facilitate and inspire learning for all students towards their fulfillment.

Ensuring high academic achievement for all our students, and why!

Schools and colleges are the life blood of any city, state or nation.  Need for literacy and education is a fundamental requirement next to food, air, water.  The need may be more in certain demographic populations and may be less in certain other demographics. The bottom line is children need to have access to literacy and education.   It is said “education and literacy is not only filling up the minds with facts and information; but lighting up the lamp of young minds and awaken and develop their desire to know-understand and excel.”

Academic success and subsequently high academic achievements begin with making class room a welcome and enjoyable place; which accepts and appreciates your presence there.  In today’s ever- increasing science & technology environment; in my opinion STEM education should be fun and learning going hand in hand.

The aspiration and desire for better academic achievement is necessary as well as important to be acknowledged, applauded and recognized. How-ever if we create the environment and set the right expectations by our actions and attitudes and practices; we can work on taking it one notch up and one step at a time. As long we persist and stay consistent with our efforts and continue to believe in them and for them; our goal will be reached.

Student Centered Challenges to be addressed in a classroom

Lack of understanding and comprehension

Inattentiveness

Distractions

Being sensitive about individual needs and pay attention and accept to support them, at their level of requirments.

My solution to address above challenges:

My first -priority is to establish attention as a class on the (State of Virginia) learning standards. The emphasis is on practical application of physics in other areas of science and technology and how physics affects our world.

My second priority is to work on connection and communication leading to further understanding and comprehension from the student’s perspective and level of understanding and comprehension.

For us to get anything done; as a class we need to focus on what needs to be done; and second is to get them want to do it and get to know!

  • The first challenge I expect is to help them find a good reason and motivation why are they in school in the first place!!

  •  The second challenge is to help them understand why study and learn at all!!

  •  The third challenge is develop some level of self -discipline!

  •  The fourth challenge is meeting kids to communicate and focus on where they are and where they need to be.  By letting them know! that some- one cares about them and accepts them for who they are.!!

My first experience that led my path to be a coach and mentor:

About three to four years back; one of good friends came and shared his concerns; that his three sons, eldest of whom was graduating high school; had no direction; purpose or focus in what he wanted to do or pursue. He hung out with the wrong crowd; did what he liked and never listened to his parents. They could not sit down and talk to him or communicate with him on anything; let alone career and purpose!

Being an academic success myself with a Ph. D career in research and academics; his father’s request to me was to see if I could reach out and communicate with him.  Being from a different generation I had no clue! How I was going to go about doing it? My first challenge was to let him know by communicating that I want to be his friend and not a high handed lecturing parental figure.Second challenge was to find out what he was thinking and how he was thinking about life; career; purpose etc.Third challenge was to learn how to speak their language and understand what they were trying to convey.Fourth challenge was being patient with their microwave mentality (having it all now!!) and no concept of working hard and paying the price for success.

I learnt to be a friend and a buddy on his terms; of -course without compromising myself.

I became a good listener in hearing him out by spending time with him; without judging or complaining.

I learnt to ask simple questions and paid attention to his answers; and letting him know I cared about what he thought. I learnt to let him make mistakes and learn without reprimand or criticism.

I also let him know my expectations and my belief in him that he had the ability to make it good.

Today he is budding successful entrepreneur; holds a successful job; present s himself with confidence.  He was 19-20 yeas when I met him; today he is smart young man of 24-25. He has made his parent s and family proud and his two brothers look up to him as role model.I am in a position to apply this experience and knowledge in class rooms and can certainly set smaller achievable (SMART) goals; which the students over a academic year can achieve with help and support.

Anyone can teach a highly motivated; capable students and get them to perform. The challenge is “Can you reach down and pull up a less fortunate young mind; who for whatever reason is stuck  in a unsupportive and unsuitable and unproductive environment.”

Extraordinary people are extra–ordinary because they are prepared to do what the ordinary will not attempt.

I have been with teaching at all levels from Graduate school –down to elementary as part of my career; for nearly two decades.   I am currently in the Fairfax county school system for the past four years teaching to highly motivated to highly needed student population.

I also currently do personal coaching & mentorship (outside of my regular job commitments) for 18-30 years of age individuals in life skills; personal development and self- improvement with motivation to succeed and excel as individuals.
